University of Catania, Sicily - Part 3

University of Catania, Sicily - Botanical Gardens

December 6th to 11th

Sicily was very different from Italy.  The weather was beautiful and warm, the people were friendly and most spoke English and the food was the best part of my trip.  When I go back to Italy, Sicily will definitely be part of my trip .....highly recommended.

University of Catania, Sicily - Part 2

This is where the monks would have tea.  It has been renovated to now only be part of the tour; it is not being used.  The detail in the building is quite exquisite.

A dream come true for me - architecture and books ------->

The University of Catania was built in 1434.  It is the oldest university in Sicily, the 13th oldest in Italy and the 29th oldest in the world.

I took an interesting tour of the university seeing some of the original building, a monastery, still partially in tact from the earthquake in 1693.

Catania, Sicily

Ortega, a hour drive outside of Catania.  These are the ruins in the center of the small town.  There was also an open market and I went to a great restaurant for a excellent authentic 3-course Italian meal.

Catania, Sicily

Catania, Sicily

Never seen so many different cathedrals; there was an entire street dedicated to them.
Sicily.... one of my favorites.
